A State of the Art forms the collection of short fiction, primarily science fiction, by Iain M. Banks. A title novelette & a select few of the stories treat by having aspects of his first society, The Culture. Particularly, the novelette chronicles a Culture mission to Earth, and likewise serves as a prequel of sorts to Use of Weapons, featuring some sooner activities of one of that novel's characters, Diziet Sma.
This book includes a kind of styles: among the 1st- & third-individual story, A State of the Art itself appears in the form of an emended report.

Piece - originally published in The Observer Magazine on 13th August 1989 using illustrations by Peter Knock. Piece was besides adapted for radio by Craig Warner & broadcast in BBC Radio Five, 6th June 1991.
The State Of The Art - originally published as a could have alone novelette within 1989, Mark V. Ziesing, ISBN 0929480066. the handle art was by Arnie Fenner, & the limited edition of 400 books within a slipcase, & signed by each creative person & creator was as well issued.

A collection was published around the The states first in 2004 by Night Shade Books. A limited edition of this release contains extra lesson by Banks non uncovered in the UK version. This is non-nonfictional prose & poetry.
Banks doesn't seem to develop produced any other short fiction, suggesting that he finds the novel a more natural form.
